DAVID MEYER is a direct descendant of the Liepman and Loewen families and is distantly related to many of the other Jewish families who once lived in SE Kansas. As a child he often visited Fort Scott with his grandmother Viola Liepman Meyer. Over the years, he has done extensive genealogical research on his ancestors. David, who holds a Juris Doctorate and a Master’s in historic preservation, lives in St Louis where he’s an attorney.
KATHERINE EMMETT-SWEETSER has always been interested in history and genealogy. Since moving to Fort Scott in 1999, she has become a vocal advocate of historic preservation in the downtown; she co-chaired the project which resulted in the creation of the Downtown Fort Scott Historic District. Prior to coming to Fort Scott, she lived in Pittsburg, Kansas. Kate, who is a geographer, taught Spanish at Pittsburg State University.
